Meaning and Purpose in Medicine Series-The Moral Ecology of Medicine: How Are Good Doctors Made & Lost?

Chicago, IL US
November 10, 2026
While the late medical sociologist Charles Bosk rightly observed that residency was fundamentally “a moral education,” modern graduate medical training has too often narrowed its focus to efficiency, knowledge acquisition and technical mastery. But without deliberate attention to the moral formation of trainees, how can we hope to cultivate surgeons whose professional identity can withstand the environmental hazards of commercialized medicine? Dr. Ryan Antiel confronts this question head-on. In this talk, he explores why virtue, character and the habits of moral perception are essential — not optional — in shaping surgeons who can care wisely and humanely for the most vulnerable.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed for University of Chicago clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe how the culture and practice environment of surgery shape clinicians’ habits of attention, professional identity, and moral formation;
  • Distinguish among burnout, moral injury, and “heartache” as different frameworks for understanding loss of meaning in surgical practice;
  • Identify practical ways surgical training programs can create environments that cultivate attention, belonging, and practical wisdom.
