Advancing Community-Oriented Care by Utilizing Photography and Creative Arts to Challenge Perceptions

Chicago, IL US
July 14, 2026 to July 23, 2026
This session uses photography and the arts to challenge misconceptions by presenting narratives and images that celebrate the diversity, strengths, creativity, and vitality of historically marginalized communities, specifically Black and African American communities. Participants will explore how representation shapes perceptions of community and consider the question: Who gets to define how a community is seen? Participants will examine how protective factors, resilience, cultural identity, and community-oriented care can serve as foundations for fostering hope, belonging, and well-being. The goal is a shift beyond symptom reduction and solely individual-focused models of care toward inclusive, culturally responsive, and community-centered approaches that recognize the collective strengths and lived experiences of historically marginalized communities.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for health and wellness professionals at the University of Chicago interested in enhancing skills and knowledge of inclusion and belonging.
