Unlike routine cancer screenings, universal dementia screening isn’t commonly recommended. Instead, cognitive tests are used selectively, when memory concerns or other red flags arise. That’s why it’s vital for clinical staff to recognize signs of dementia and know when to initiate a screening.
In this module, you'll learn how to identify clients who may benefit from screening, perform clinic-based cognitive tests, and interpret the results within the broader context of the patient’s medical history. You'll also explore how to translate screening findings into clear next steps, whether that’s a specialist referral, additional evaluation, or resource guidance.
By building these skills, you’ll be better equipped to detect cognitive decline early and support timely, appropriate care for older adults, including those aging with HIV.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for interdisciplinary healthcare providers, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, psychologists, and social workers involved in the care of people aging with HIV and at risk for or living with dementia.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify clinical signs of dementia in clients who may benefit from cognitive screening;
- Perform clinic-based dementia screening tests using standardized tools;
- Interpret dementia screening results within the context of the patient's overall medical and psychosocial history;
