Build Confidence in Caring for Older Adults with Chronic Pain and Opioid Use
Strengthen your ability to provide effective, patient-centered care for older adults with chronic pain, opioid use, and opioid use disorder (OUD). This series offers practical strategies, clinical tools, and expert guidance designed for community-based primary care.
Through interactive sessions and case-based learning, participants will explore multimodal approaches to chronic pain management, strategies for safer opioid prescribing, and best practices for recognizing and treating OUD in older adults. The series will also address shared decision-making and patient-centered clinical decision support, helping clinicians translate evidence-based approaches into efficient, effective care for their patients.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for community-based primary care clinicians dedicated to providing the highest level of care to older adult patients with chronic pain and opioid use disorder.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe age-related clinical, cognitive, functional, pharmacokinetic, social, and caregiver considerations relevant to pain management in older adults.
- Identify multimodal non-pharmacologic strategies for pain management in older adults.
- Assess pain, function, and patient-centered pain goals in older adults.
- Implement shared decision-making strategies for pain management in older adults.
- Select age-appropriate pharmacologic strategies for pain management in older adults.
- Apply risk-mitigation strategies for opioid prescribing in older adults.
- Differentiate opioid use disorder from age-related or co-occurring conditions in older adults.
- Evaluate evidence-based treatment strategies for opioid use disorder in older adults.
