Engaging Communities to Increase Belonging, Hope, and Well-being for Suicide Prevention in Black and African American Communities

This session will feature two community-oriented, trauma-informed programs that support youth and Black and African American communities, particularly those on the South and West sides of Chicago. Guest speakers from both programs will share their experiences, clinical considerations, and key takeaways for health and wellness professionals. Participants will learn how these organizations utilize approaches that extend beyond individual interventions by integrating community strengths and collaborative partnerships to address the broader factors that influence youth well-being.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for health and wellness professionals at the University of Chicago interested in enhancing skills and knowledge of inclusion and belonging.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe community-oriented, trauma-informed approaches that promote hope, resilience, and protective factors.
  • Apply community-oriented and trauma-informed strategies to youth-focused health and wellness practice.
  • Examine cultural, institutional, and systemic factors affecting youth impacted by suicide risk and violence.
