Faculty Advancing Medical Education (FAME): Clinical Coaching Introduction

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship). FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in conceptual and practical skills for teaching and assessment.
This session will discuss academic coaching and its differences from mentoring and advising. It will also define the phases of the Master Adaptive Learner model. After the session, participants will be able to apply academic coaching to support the development of learners into master adaptive learners.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for course and clerkship directors in the Pritzker School of Medicine as well as faculty who teach in courses and clerkships.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Define how coaching is different from advising, mentoring, and other traditional faculty roles;
- Describe the master adaptive learner (MAL) as defined by the American Medical Association;
- Identify the benefits of the MAL model in medical education;
- Explain how coaching supports the MAL model.
