Well-Being Month 2023 Lecture Series: Check Yourself, Before You Wreck Yourself: Navigating Residency With Mental Illness

The goal of these activities is to bring awareness to the topic of burnout in healthcare professionals and present strategies to promote resilience that will improve practitioner health and ultimately patient outcomes.
 
Vanessa Buie, MD, MBA, reflects on her experience as a surgical resident at the University of Chicago while managing her mental health needs. She will discuss her tipping point and the resources and tools she used to navigate medical leave and her return to work.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals at the University of Chicago and its affiliates dedicated to improving resilience in themselves and others.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • State the importance of personal values in residency training;
  • Recall the importance of finding the right team and distress tolerance skills;
  • Identify options and resources available to ask for help effectively;
  • Discuss the importance of self-accountability and ownership of personal mental health needs.
