This activity will provide participants with the latest advances in trauma care for patients in a variety of situations including the battlefield, mass casualty events, and in space. Participants will then be able to provide the highest level of care to patients in these unique and challenging situations.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in anesthesiology, surgery, emergency medicine, military medicine, aerospace medicine, and other areas dedicated to the treatment of trauma.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the development of medical pre-hospital emergency medicine;
  • State the current standards of combat trauma resuscitation and how these standards are delivered from point of injury to repatriation;
  • Describe age-related changes in the geriatric trauma population;
  • Describe the challenges and importance of acute pain care on the modern battlefield;
  • Discuss the potential benefits of using regional analgesia in patients with traumatic injury;
  • Identify current challenges and controversies in traumatic brain injury management;
  • Outline the evolution of fixed ratio product transfusion for massive transfusion in trauma care;
  • Cite the physiologic effects of microgravity, radiation, and isolation;
  • Discuss how simple blast simulations help with understanding explosive injury.
