Intro to Spatial Analysis & GIS for Spatial Epidemiology in R

Our 3-hour workshop at the SER Annual Meeting 2022 will introduce open source spatial data analysis, GIS, and mapping for epidemiologists and medical practitioners and professionals. The workshop will cover an overview of geospatial data and data formats, thematic mapping, cartographic techniques, geocoding addresses, mapping health resource point data such as clinics or medication access points, and calculating new spatial variables, such as availability of health resources within a one-mile range.
 
The goal of this workshop is to help epidemiologic researchers, analysts, and practitioners develop stronger spatial data analytics and visualization skills. We will introduce spatial analytic functionalities for the practitioner community using the R software environment using applied examples for visualizing and mapping health data at the neighborhood level.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for the epidemiologic research community and members of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER), which includes healthcare professionals and academic and industry partners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Standardize health data at the neighborhood level;
  • Integrate health data from another source into analysis;
  • Calculate new variables, including the number of clinics or health resources in an area and the number of clinics or health resources within a set distance (i.e., 1 mile);
  • Use R Spatial libraries and applications for mapping spatial analysis;
  • State how and where to access additional resources on R Spatial tools and tutorials as well as open-source health data.
