Managing Pain During Serious Illness: Managing Acute Pain and Distress at the End of Life

This series will give interdisciplinary healthcare providers strategies to address pain during serious illnesses such as cancer and organ failure. Providers will have improved knowledge of the psychosocial context of pain, techniques to assess pain, and a greater understanding of the role of behavioral health, occupational therapy, and palliative care in managing pain.
 
This session will provide tools to manage pain at the end of life.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for interdisciplinary healthcare providers, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, psychologists, and social workers dedicated to managing pain during serious illness.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recall psychosocial changes at the end of life that complicate pain management;
  • Discuss strategies for identifying pain in patients with altered mental status;
  • Summarize strategies for engaging lay caregivers in chronic pain management in home-based hospice care.
