Comer Children’s Hospital is a safe place to give and receive care, and this activity will provide additional skills to participants to de-escalate and manage challenging situations that may present themselves to ensure Comer remains safe and welcoming for everyone.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all clinicians and staff who interact with patients at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe how to work effectively as a team when managing patient agitation;
  • Identify strategies to feel safe and capable when managing patient agitation;
  • State how to reduce emotional distress and physical harm during patient car transfer;
  • Recall ways to ensure patients feel safe, respected, and calm as well as experience less anger and frustration;
  • List alternatives to physical restraint;
  • State how Policy PC-260: Behavioral Health Services protects patients, clinicians, and staff;
  • Review Code Green, PACT, and the Pilot program and how to use them.
