Meaning and Purpose in Medicine – This Is Water: Medical Culture, Character, and One Fish’s Reckoning
Chicago, IL US
May 18, 2026
In this talk, Dr. Pavlic will help participants recognize specific beliefs, attitudes, and norms embedded in medical culture that often shape physician behavior without conscious awareness and reflect on moments when these factors influenced them in ways that fell short of the physician they intended to be. Then, Dr. Pavlic will describe how structure reflection and virtue ethics can help us develop the self-awareness to choose, rather than absorb, who we are becoming and one step we can take to integrate this into our practice.
Target Audience
This activity has been designed for University of Chicago clinicians and other healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Name specific beliefs, attitudes, and norms embedded in medical culture that shape physician behavior, often without our conscious awareness;
- Reflect honestly on moments in their own training or practice where the culture of medicine influenced them in ways that fell short of the physician they intended to be;
- Describe how structured reflection and virtue ethics can help physicians in training develop the self-awareness to choose, rather than simply absorb, the kind of physician they become;
- Identify key lessons learned from developing and teaching The Good Doctor including what worked, what didn’t and what student data revealed, and identify one concrete recommendation toward integrating virtue ethics into their own curriculum or practice.
