Medical Education Day Retreat: Strengthening the Continuum: Best Practices and Innovations in Medical Education

This activity convenes leaders from UME, GME, CME, and Simulation to share best practices, align expectations and competencies, and develop practical, collaborative solutions. Through cross-disciplinary dialogue and shared problem-solving, the retreat strengthens continuity in medical education, enhances faculty effectiveness, and supports high-quality training that ultimately improves patient care.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for GME and UME program directors, clerkship and course directors, and other leaders in medical education.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain key sources of fragmentation across the UME, GME, CME, and Simulation education continuum.
  • Describe principles of competency-based medical education that support alignment across the continuum.
  • Identify an area within their program or course where cross-continuum educational alignment could be improved.
  • Analyze a learner transition or remediation case to determine gaps in expectations or competency reinforcement between UME and GME.
  • Compare educational strategies used in UME and GME to support adaptive learning, coaching, or learner progression.
  • Develop a feasible strategy to enhance collaboration or continuity between at least two stages of the medical education continuum.
