Increasing Inclusive Practices Through Self-Examination of Professional Identity

Building connections and relationships is foundational to clinical and administrative work as it fosters community, collaboration, and inclusion, particularly for mental health professionals. Through self-reflection and small group discussions, participants in this session will examine their professional identity to increase awareness of factors that inform approaches and perspectives. The goal is to hone the intrapersonal skills of introspection, active listening, and giving and receiving support to increase cultural humility and inclusive practices.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, medical assistants, phlebotomists, nurses, physicians, wellness coaches, and support and administrative staff who provide health and wellness information and services to students on a university campus.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize strategies for giving and receiving support to maintain personal well-being during challenging periods of work, thus preventing burnout and compassion fatigue;
  • Identify how to demonstrate openness and curiosity by engaging in active listening, reflecting, and expressing gratitude to foster inclusivity and communication;
  • Explain how family, cultural, community, or societal expectations, values, or needs influence our professional identity and approach to work, including clinical, administrative, and supervision.
