IBD-U APP Educational Seminar Series: Stoma Care and Considerations in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

This activity will improve the quality of care provided by the nursing team and advanced practice providers caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease within the University of Chicago’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center through knowledge acquisition and interprofessional communication.
Stoma care and management are crucial parts of caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This session will discuss indications for stoma creation and fecal diversion in these patients. It will also cover the different types of stomas, potential implications on effluent, and possible complications.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for inpatient RNs, outpatient RNs, CMAs, APPs, and other healthcare professionals providing care to patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Assess the rationale for stoma creation;
- Compare the differences between stoma locations and the location’s impact on function;
- Discuss dietary modifications required throughout the perioperative care;
- Describe the basics of stoma care and management.
