Health Literacy and Clear Communications
July 26, 2023 to October 26, 2023
This session will raise awareness about the need for clear communication with patients and staff. It will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to use nonmedical language and the Teach-Back Method to improve provider-patient communication.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals at University of Chicago Medicine interested in enhancing their skills and knowledge of working in a multicultural setting.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the impact of low health literacy on patient safety and quality of care;
- Recall the regulatory expectation related to addressing low health literacy;
- State how teach-back can be used to improve patients’ understanding of their condition and medical care;
- Describe the Teach-Back Method and how it can be used in practice;
- Identify when to use plain nonmedical language with patients.

All participants will be provided with a certificate of attendance. This course is approved for 1 continuing education hour for licensed therapists (PT, PTA, OT, or COTA) in Illinois. The University of Chicago Medical Center has not applied to any other state for therapist CE credit. Participants will need to do this individually through their jurisdiction outside of Illinois.
