HIV/COVID-19 Mini-Residency-October 2020

October 7, 2020 to October 9, 2020
The mini-residency is a three-day intensive educational experience in HIV, COVID-19, and related co-morbidities. Lectures on a variety of HIV and COVID-19-related topics are interspersed with case studies where participants can immediately apply the lecture information to patient situations. Currently the HIV care continuum reflects the need to routinely screen for HIV and link those diagnosed to consistent medical care. This provider-focused learning didactic model allows clinicians to expand their knowledge about HIV to enhance the care they provide and progress their patients successfully along the care continuum.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals committed to the treatment and care of patients living with HIV, COVID-19, and other related conditions, including prescribers such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe current trends in HIV epidemiology in the United States;
  • Discuss the fundamentals and new trends in HIV prevention, HIV testing and counseling, including the use of PrEP and ART for prevention;
  • Relate the natural history of HIV infection and disease pathogenesis;
  • List the classes and targets of anti-retroviral drugs, their side effects, and their indications for use;
  • Review ART management in consideration of the prevention and effective management of common HIV co-morbidities, including depression, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, HIV-associated neurological defects;
  • Cite factors leading to drug resistance and three ways to reduce the risk of drug resistance;
  • Recall current statistics surrounding COVID-19, flu mortality, and the degree of severity this virus affects adults;
  • Discuss the current understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic including treatment alternative and prevention schemes;
  • Identify key elements of ambulatory HIV care via virtual encounters, including respectful engagement, sensitive history taking, limited physical diagnosis, laboratory management and clinical monitoring, and patient education.
