HIV/COVID-19 Mini-Residency
Target Audience
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe current trends in HIV epidemiology in the United States;
- Discuss the fundamentals of and new trends in HIV prevention, testing, and counseling, including the use of PrEP and ART for prevention;
- List the classes and targets of anti-retroviral drugs, their side effects, and their indications for use;
- Review ART management in consideration of the prevention and effective management of common HIV co-morbidities, including depression, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and HIV-associated neurological defects;
- Cite factors leading to ART drug resistance and three ways to reduce the risk of drug resistance;
- Describe the current epidemiology of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the United States and current STI prevention and treatment strategies;
- Recall current statistics surrounding COVID-19, mortality, and its degree of severity among adults;
- Discuss the current understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic, including antiviral and immunomodulatory treatments and vaccines;
- Identify fundamental elements of ambulatory HIV care via virtual encounters, including respectful engagement, sensitive history taking, limited physical diagnosis, laboratory management and clinical monitoring, and patient education;
- Describe strategies for HIV management during pregnancy to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
