Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) Course

Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) is a 2-day course intended to teach non-intensivists the basics of assessment and management of acutely ill patients. The complexity of the critical care environment demands a minimum level of knowledge, skills and attitude to manage the care of critically ill patients. This effective program incorporates didactic and simulation scenarios to assess competence and teach evidence-based practice while maintaining patient safety and quality care. This FCCS course offers non-critical care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants - providers not formally trained in critical care a systemic approach to initial management of the acutely ill patients.

Target Audience

This activity has been planned for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in the following specialties: Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, General Practice, and Geriatric Medicine.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, participants will be able to:

  • Prioritize assessment needs for critically ill and injured patients.
  • Select appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Identify and respond to significant changes in unstable patients.
  • Recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions.
  • Determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer.
