Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) Course

Hospitals are hiring more and more hospitalists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants as an economic solution to shortages in professional staff, especially intensivists; physicians with specialized training in critical care medicine. The complexity of the critical care environment demands a minimum level of knowledge, skills and attitude to manage the care of critically ill patients. Non-critical care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants often do not have a formalized orientation program or “residency” as critical care physicians. An effective program would incorporate didactic and simulation scenarios to assess competence and teach evidence-based practice while maintaining patient safety and quality care.
 
The FCCS course offers an approach to initial management of the critically ill patient for providers not formally trained in critical care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed for physicians and particularly other allied healthcare professionals dedicated to the management of critically ill patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, participants will be able to:

  • Prioritize assessment needs for critically ill and injured patients;
  • Select appropriate diagnostic tests;
  • Identify and respond to significant changes in unstable patients;
  • Recognize and initiate management of acute of life threatening conditions;
  • Determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer.
