Research has shown that small-group learning improves academic achievement, builds relationships with classmates and faculty, and develops the skills for life-long learning compared to competitive and individualistic learning. In this session, participants will learn how to connect learning goals to small-group learning practices, apply key concepts to prepare a small-group learning session, and assess student learning in small-group activities.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for course and clerkship directors in the Pritzker School of Medicine as well as faculty who teach in courses and clerkships.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Prepare a small group learning session for their students;
  • Apply principles for impactful group work in their teaching practice;
  • Develop a plan to assess student learning and provide feedback in a small group session.
