Faculty Advancing Medical Education (FAME): Best Practices for Virtual Interviews

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship). FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in key conceptual and practical skills in teaching and assessment.

Medical school, residency, and fellowship interviews are moving online for the 2020-2021 admissions cycle all across the country. This session will highlight best practices for conducting interviews and recruiting excellent applicants using a virtual platform while mitigating technological difficulties.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for faculty members at the University of Chicago and NorthShore University HealthSystem dedicated to medical education.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the potential consequences of moving to a virtual interview platform;
  • Identify factors that can influence the interview experience for the interviewer and for the interviewee;
  • State technology best practices for virtual interviewing;
  • Discuss strategies to mitigate technology failure;
  • Explain how to balance the goals of applicant experience and optimal recruitment outcomes on a virtual platform.
