Faculty Advancing Medical Education (FAME): Faculty Engagement, Implicit Bias, and the Clinical Learning Environment

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship) at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in key conceptual and practical skills in teaching and assessment.

These sessions will focus on the improvement of the core basics of education, with a special focus on topics relevant to the learning environment at NorthShore University HealthSystem. Workshops will provide information regarding faculty engagement with teaching and service, the impact of implicit bias on the learning environment, and improving bedside teaching skills.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for faculty members at NorthShore University HealthSystem dedicated to medical education.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of faculty vitality;
  • Identify incentives and barriers to faculty engagement in non-clinical work;
  • List strategies to enhance faculty engagement both in ourselves and in others;
  • Identify two incentives for engaging with residents and students;
  • Discuss how social determinants of health impact patients;
  • Recognize how implicit bias can manifest in the clinical setting and the learning environment;
  • State resources that can minimize the impact of implicit bias in the health care setting;
  • Discuss the best practices for and the barriers to teaching at the bedside;
  • Describe how to use the 1 Minute Preceptor to enhance bedside teaching;
  • List pearls and pitfalls for bedside teaching procedures; 
  • Discuss how to use immediate short feedback as a bedside teaching tool.
