Faculty Advancing Medical Education (FAME): Activating Learners/Activating Lecturers

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship). FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in conceptual and practical skills for teaching and assessment.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to activate lectures by applying the chunking principle and interspersing active learning strategies into the lecture format. It will offer solutions for active learning methods that can easily be implemented, even in large lecture halls. It will also discuss best practices for message design to help learners process new knowledge effectively and efficiently.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for faculty members at the University of Chicago and NorthShore University HealthSystem dedicated to medical education.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the chunking principle and its relation to cognitive overload;
  • Explain how to apply the chunking principle when developing content for presentations or other learning materials;
  • Discuss the benefits of active learning;
  • Relate how to incorporate active learning strategies into lecture presentations.
