Faculty Advancing Medical Education (FAME): How to be a Supermodel: Using Role Modeling to Become an Exemplary Educator

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship). FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in key conceptual and practical skills in teaching and assessment.

Have you found your teaching lacking its usual zing? Are you a bit out of fashion when it comes to engaging leaners? Do you feel like you need a teaching makeover? In this interactive virtual FAME session, you will be introduced to a simple, efficient, and highly effective technique for teaching through the use of role modeling. We will engage in a discussion of what role modeling is and how to make it more effective, while also brainstorming areas to implement it into your educational practice. When we are done, through several simple tweaks to your current style, you too can be an educational Supermodel.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for faculty members at the University of Chicago and NorthShore University HealthSystem dedicated to medical education.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define role modeling in medical education;
  • Describe the impact of role modeling in medical education;
  • Describe a framework for role modeling in medical education;
  • Create strategies to integrate role modeling into educational practice.
