Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME): Professionalism in Medicine: It Can Be Taught!

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship). FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in conceptual and practical skills for teaching and assessment.

This session will help faculty define and describe professionalism in medicine. It will review how to train learners at various levels in professionalism in medicine and correct errors in professionalism. It will end with some clinical and professional scenarios to practice calling out and calling in as well as reporting unprofessional behavior.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for course and clerkship directors in the Pritzker School of Medicine and faculty who teach in courses and clerkships.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify barriers associated with assessing professionalism and strategies for correction;
  • Recognize professionalism through the lens of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and analyze its impact on healthcare practice;
  • Define professionalism and articulate its relevance in the context of medicine;
  • Justify the significance of professionalism and its role in effective teaching.
