Faculty Advancing Medical Education (FAME): Incorporating Small Group Learning

Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) is a faculty development program sponsored by the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators and the MERITS Program (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship). FAME supports faculty educators by providing resources and training in conceptual and practical skills for teaching and assessment.

This activity will review the evidence for small-group learning and discuss five common small-group teaching formats used in medical education. Participants will use the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) Model to begin designing one small group learning session of their choice.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for course and clerkship directors in the Pritzker School of Medicine, as well as faculty who teach in courses and clerkships.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define small group learning in the context of medical education;
  • Identify evidence supporting the use of small-group learning for effective education;
  • Describe five common small-group learning formats;
  • Outline a small group learning session for your teaching practice.
