Enhancing Culturally Informed Interpersonal Communication Through Simulations and Interactive Discussions

This session utilizes simulation-based learning and interactive discussions to enhance culturally informed interpersonal communication for health and wellness professionals. Through realistic scenarios that mirror actual patient interactions, participants will practice active listening, demonstrate empathetic responses, and adjust their communication strategies to address the unique needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds. The goal is to enhance interpersonal communication, increase self-awareness, and promote self-reflection, ultimately leading to more effective delivery of health and wellness services.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for health and wellness professionals at the University of Chicago interested in enhancing skills and knowledge of inclusion and belonging.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the distinction between intent and impact to promote self-reflection and reduce interpersonal bias.
  • Demonstrate effective active listening when engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Adapt communication strategies in real time to respond to the cultural perspectives and needs of others.
