ECHO-Chicago: Childhood Adversity & Trauma: Strategies for Promoting Health

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful or traumatic events that may result from violence, abuse, neglect, loss, disaster, and other emotionally harmful experiences. Given the high prevalence of ACEs on Chicago’s South and West sides, and the serious impact that they have on lifelong health, primary care providers (PCPs) in these communities need to be equipped to approach their patients about and address issues of trauma. Through this series, ECHO-Chicago will train community-based primary care providers to assess and address ACEs and implement trauma-informed practices to improve overall well-being of adolescents living in Chicago through ECHO-Chicago’s innovative workforce development model for expanding primary care capacity in under-served communities. It will lead to a greater coordination of services in primary care in order to keep patients healthy and connected to healthcare when necessary, leading to improved patient experience and improved health outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals dedicated to treating adverse childhood experiences effectively.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe an ecological model of childhood/adulthood health that includes individual factors, family factors, school factors, community factors, and factors societal across time;
  • Discuss the impact of ACEs on health outcomes across the lifespan as well as protective factors and their importance;
  • Define social determinants of health, unmet social needs, and expanded ACEs and their impact on health;
  • Assess the role of the healthcare team in treating ACEs;
  • List local and national examples of community resources for children who have experienced ACEs;
  • State the biological and physiological impact of childhood adversity and trauma;
  • Identify self-care tools used to cope with stress treating trauma-related issues;
  • Recall screening tools to incorporate into in-patient encounters involving ACEs;
  • Recognize intervention tools to strengthen the therapeutic web in schools and communities;
  • Explain how to apply principles of neurobiology to trauma treatment;
  • Explain racial disparities associated with caring for patients with trauma.
