ECHO-Chicago: Complex Pediatric Asthma

Nationally, 1 in 11 children have asthma, but in Chicago that prevalence is closer to 14%. That rate is much higher in communities of color and in low-income communities—where many of our participating providers work— making pediatric asthma a pressing public health issue and a barometer for inequality. Fortunately, even complex pediatric asthma can be managed with evidence-based asthma care guidelines that reduce morbidity and mortality.

Our Complex Pediatric Asthma series curriculum is designed to expand primary care capacity in diagnosing and managing complex asthma for Chicago’s most vulnerable children and to increase best practices for pediatric asthma management in the community. We will discuss diagnosis, treatment, symptom control, and related co-morbidities of the most complex cases of pediatric asthma. We welcome all community-based pediatric and family medicine healthcare providers to join this series and learn how to manage complex pediatric asthma cases and improve the health outcomes of all patients.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals dedicated to the treatment of complex pediatric asthma.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • State how to identify patients with asthma using common tests for diagnosis and assessment of severity;
  • Discuss definitions, history, and investigations related to diagnosis and monitoring of pediatric asthma;
  • Describe common treatment plans for asthma including pharmacotherapy, environmental modifications, patient and family education, and school-based interventions;
  • Review how to monitor asthma symptoms adequately to reduce the affect they have on the children experiencing them;
  • Describe common comorbid conditions of asthma and differential diagnoses;
  • Discuss problems associated with difficult to treat or severe asthma.
