Care for Self and Community to Engage in Diversity & Inclusion Conversations

Chicago, IL US
December 7, 2023
Care for self and community is more important than ever, especially for wellness professionals, health and mental health providers, and caregivers. Mindfulness practices serve as effective self-care methods for promoting active listening and non-judgmental communication, which can deter burnout and compassion fatigue, and they also contribute significantly to enhancing diversity and inclusion conversations. By incorporating mindfulness and self-compassion frameworks, participants in this session will learn and practice re-centering and grounding techniques and gain tools to improve their self-awareness. The goal is to foster openness, curiosity (non-judgmental communication), and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives, ultimately promoting a more inclusive and empathetic environment.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, medical assistants, phlebotomists, nurses, physicians, wellness coaches, and support and administrative staff who provide health and wellness information and services to students on a university campus.

Learning Objectives

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify one method to increase awareness and non-judgmental acknowledgment of one’s internal reactions;
  • Articulate how discomfort can inhibit active listening and connections and negatively impact engaging in diversity and inclusion conversations and learning;
  • Describe how mindfulness and compassion can increase resilience and foster a supportive, inclusive community;
  • Demonstrate a mindfulness or self-compassion technique for re-centering and grounding to facilitate non-judgmental communication.
