Testing for SARS-CoV-2: Practical Strategies for the Implementation and Interpretation of COVID-19 Antigen and Antibody Tests

COVID-19 presents unique challenges to clinicians treating patients with HIV. This session is part of Case Discussions in HIV and COVID: Infection Control, Testing, and Management Issues in Ambulatory HIV Care, a 3-part learning series sponsored by the Midwest AIDS Training + Education Center. This series will consist of lecture, case discussion, and group discussion to provide clinicians with the latest best practices for treatment of these comorbid viruses.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, health educators, administrators, clerical staff, and other healthcare professionals committed to the treatment and care of patients living with HIV and COVID-19.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
 
  • Recall the natural history of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the appearance of antigens and antibodies;
  • Relate the differences between antigen and antibody tests, including differences in implementation, interpretation, practical use, and limitations;
  • Compare testing strategies for symptomatic patients, for exposed patients, and for asymptomatic patients, including the need for repeat testing;
  • Describe how to effectively implement testing policies for ambulatory care centers during the resumption of full ambulatory health services.
