Target Audience
This activity is designed for primary care, internal medicine, and emergency medicine physicians, as well as vascular surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional radiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, perfusionists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care and treatment of patients with aortic diseases.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Recall referral criteria for patients with suspected or confirmed AAA, including indications for consultation with vascular surgeons or other specialists for further evaluation and management;
- Identify specific demographic and clinical risk factors associated with a high likelihood of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development in patients, including age, gender, smoking history, and family history of cardiovascular diseases;
- Recognize potential collaborative opportunities among clinicians from diverse specialties and those working outside healthcare to optimize patient care, research initiatives, and technological advancements in aortic aneurysm management;
- Order appropriate screening and imaging studies for AAA diagnosis based on clinical indications and guidelines, such as abdominal ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) angiography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI);
- Describe how to perform a comprehensive physical examination to accurately diagnose AAA, including palpation of the abdomen for pulsatile masses, assessment of peripheral pulses, and auscultation for bruits;
- Discuss the utility and clinical implications of emerging imaging modalities and techniques (e.g., 4D MRI, contrast-enhanced ultrasound) in the diagnosis, surveillance, and treatment planning for patients with aortic disease, including AAA;
- Evaluate evidence-based treatment options for AAA, encompassing conservative approaches (e.g., blood pressure control, smoking cessation) and preventive medical therapies (e.g., statin therapy, antiplatelet agents), considering patient-specific factors and comorbidities.
