This activity provides a non-threatening environment for advanced practice providers (APPs) to learn and practice essential diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Participants will be introduced to five key procedures: central line placement, arterial line placement and arterial blood gases, knee injection, suturing, and lumbar punctures. The activity is designed to teach safe and effective performance of these procedures.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for UChicago Medicine advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify the physical landmarks used to perform a lumbar puncture, central venous and arterial line placement, suturing, and knee joint injections;
- List absolute and relative contraindications of lumbar puncture central venous and arterial line placement, suturing, and knee joint injections;
- State complications of lumbar puncture central venous and arterial line placement, suturing, and knee joint injections;
- Describe the technique for lumbar puncture, central venous and arterial line placement, suturing, and knee joint injections;
- Discuss the clinical indications for lumbar puncture, central venous and arterial line placement, suturing, and knee joint injections;
- Illustrate the proper use of sterile technique and universal precautions;
- Demonstrate the technique for lumbar puncture, central venous and arterial line placement, suturing, and knee joint injections.
