Advanced Communication in HealthCare Workshop

July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022
This interactive virtual program will provide patient-centered training for doctors and other healthcare professionals and will emphasize core competencies for responding to individual patient needs, values, and preferences by practicing communication skills such as open-ended inquiry, reflective listening and empathy. The program is tailored for NorthShore providers and is led by experienced physician faculty and is presented in three 2-hour sessions. Attendance of all three sessions is required to support learning objectives for all participants.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed for physicians, residents & fellows, nurses, APN's and other healthcare professionals with direct patient interaction.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the evidence base that supports relationship-centered communication.
  • Demonstrate how to elicit a patient’s agenda.
  • Know how to elicit the patient’s perspective.
  • Define and appreciate how to respond with empathy.
  • Understand communication skills to maximize the patient’s understanding of a collaborative plan.
