Safer Sedation/Analgesia by Non-Anesthesiologists-September 2017

Chicago, IL US
September 12, 2017
The basic science surrounding sedation is constantly evolving, and physicians who are not specialists in anesthesiology cannot possibly remain updated on every development in this area. Informal surveys from experts in the field show that non-anesthesia practitioners should receive regular training in sedation pre-assessment, pharmacology, monitoring, rescue and regulatory concerns in order to administer moderate and deep sedation safely and in compliance with Medical Center policy. This course is designed to meet this need and to assess airway rescue maneuvers. This education not only ensures compliance with relevant regulatory agencies, but helps assure the safety of sedation services at the University of Chicago stays at a high level.

The goal of this activity is to help learners identify potential risks to giving a patient moderate or deep sedation and how to rescue patients from unintended consequences of sedation.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals interested in the care of routine patients undergoing moderate sedation care.

At the conclusion of this course, the participants should be able to:

  • List monitoring requirements of safe sedation and the devices used during the process;
