Learning Objectives:
• Understand the various advance directives available to patients in Illinois, who is delegated decision-making authority, how that authority is delegated, and the limits of such authority.
• Differentiate surrogate decision-making from advance directives, identify the proper role and scope of authority of surrogate decision-makers, and understand the limits of such authority, particularly in the context of mental health treatment.
• Develop knowledge of the guardianship process, the role of the hospital and the court, and the various public and private entities who may become involved in the case.
