Learning Objectives:

1.To describe the public policy changes, since deinstitutionalization, that have caused inadvertent consequences for mental health treatment.

2. To understand the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in incarcerated populations: a. Prevalence of psychiatric disorders – including patterns of comorbid disorders -- in incarcerated populations: (a) juvenile detention; (b) jail; (c) prison. b. How prevalence and patterns of comorbid psychiatric disorders change as people age and for different sociodemographic groups.

3. To understand the challenges to mental health service use among justice involved individuals: a. How well the correctional systems provide services for persons with psychiatric disorders who are living in detention centers, jails, and prisons and…after they return to their communities. b. How the mental health and correctional systems can reduce barriers and improve the care of persons with psychiatric disorders.
