Clinical Pearls in Pediatric Rheumatology for the Primary Care Physician

The goal of this activity is to provide participants with enhanced training in musculoskeletal evaluation skills, improved knowledge of lab testing in the diagnosis of rheumatologic diseases, and strong evidence-based guidance regarding the primary care of children and adolescents with chronic rheumatologic conditions.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals dedicated to the treatment of rheumatological conditions in pediatric patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Name two features of joint pain in children that are warning signs for juvenile arthritis;
  • State when an antinuclear antibodies test is and is not useful in evaluation of children with possible rheumatologic disease;
  • Describe the "4 Ms" approach to counseling pediatric patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain;
  • Recall how to perform a comprehensive joint exam, evaluating for swelling and decreased range of motion;
  • Identify appropriate vaccination recommendations for pediatric patients on immunosuppressive medications.
