The University of Chicago Simulation Center - MOCA® Training is an American Society of Anesthesiologists endorsed program.
 
The American Society of Anesthesiologists' Simulation Education Program advocates the promotion of learning through simulation and specifically approves programs of quality in anesthesiology simulation training. The Committee on Simulation Education oversees the Simulation Education Network that provides training to satisfy the American Board of Anesthesiology’s Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®) requirements.

Members of the ASA community will benefit from this program as it promotes patient safety through refinement of clinical knowledge & skills and team training. This simulation course fulfills one requirement of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA®) Part IV. Please consult the ABA website for a list of all MOCA® requirements.
 
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) is required to include practice performance assessment and improvement in Part IV of the Maintenance of Certification (MOC). The ABA and ASA recognize simulation-based training as an innovative approach to assessing a physician’s clinical and teamwork skills in managing critical events and included it in MOCA® Part IV requirements. Simulation-based training helps anesthesiologists maintain clinical competence in ways that impact patient care.
 
Simulation is a valuable tool to help anesthesiologists refresh and assess skills. Each course will provide realistic high-fidelity simulation scenarios, including the management of difficult patient‐care scenarios. The number of scenarios is equal to the number of diplomates. The emphasis in each scenario is on teamwork and communication as well as the management of the patient. Each scenario will include a post‐scenario peer debriefing. All participants have at least one opportunity to be the primary anesthesiologist‐in‐charge during a high-fidelity simulation scenario to demonstrate their competencies.
 

Target Audience

This activity is designed for anesthesiologists dedicated to providing the highest level of care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Manage a patient with significant hemodynamic instability;
  • Manage a patient with significant hypoxemia for any cause, including difficult airway management;
  • Utilize the principles and practice of teamwork and communication.
Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology® and MOCA® are registered certification marks of the American Board of Anesthesiology®.

Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for a list of all MOCA 2.0 requirements.
 
Other Health Professional Credit
Other healthcare professionals will receive a Certificate of Participation. For information on the applicability and acceptance of Certificates of Participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME, please consult your professional licensing board.
