31st Annual Dorothy J. MacLean Fellows Conference on Clinical Medical Ethics

Each year for the past 30 years, the MacLean Center has hosted a conference that draws speakers who discuss today’s issues in clinical medical ethics. The conference remembers Dorothy Jean MacLean, who helped create the MacLean Center and was deeply committed to its work. D.J. MacLean believed that education was the best way to improve the world and throughout her life supported many leading educational institutions.

The goal of this conference is to improve patient care and outcomes by educating physicians and the other healthcare professionals about clinical medical ethics through education, dialogue, and collaboration. Participants will learn new strategies to tackle challenging ethical dilemmas in their practice, allowing them to provide improved patient care. The MacLean Conference will include many exceptional lectures on issues such as reducing disparities in health care, reproductive ethics, surgical ethics, pediatric ethics, and end-of-life issues.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians and other health care professionals interested in the field of clinical medical ethics.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss how clinical medical ethics applies broadly to the American healthcare system and specifically to individual practice;
  • Identify the ethical situations or conflicts in routine clinical encounters;
  • Explain how to apply the tenants of clinical medical ethics to scenarios encountered in practice;
  • Describe how current literature and directives in clinical medical ethics will improve ethics decisions in practice;
  • Discuss the various perspectives including legal, medical, and religious that must be taken into account in order to provide holistic patient care.

PARKING
Parking is readily available on the Midway on Saturday but may be difficult to find on Friday. The Law School is within walking distance of the 57th and 59th Street Metra stops.
