Objectives: 

Thoracentesis
Milky appearance to fluid typical but it can be clear
Give cream (enteral) prior to sampling fluid will make the fluid turn milky
Send fluid for:
Triglycerides (>110 mg/dL diagnostic, <50 mg/dL rules out)
Cholesterol (cholesterol:triglyceride >1)
Lipoprotein electrophoresis will demonstrate chylomicrons
Lymphangiography – contrast injected into a lymph node
Lymphoscintigraphy – radioactive tracer (technetium-99) injected into subcutaneous tissue
