Objectives:
•Thoracentesis
•Milky appearance to fluid typical but it can be clear
•Give cream (enteral) prior to sampling fluid will make the fluid turn milky
•Send fluid for:
•Triglycerides (>110 mg/dL diagnostic, <50 mg/dL rules out)
•Cholesterol (cholesterol:triglyceride >1)
•Lipoprotein electrophoresis will demonstrate chylomicrons
•
•Lymphangiography – contrast injected into a lymph node
•Lymphoscintigraphy – radioactive tracer (technetium-99) injected into subcutaneous tissue
