Objectives:

Understand the need for a complete history and physical examination. It is necessary to examine lymph node basins because there may be a supraclavicular/jugular node that would be easier to biopsy than a mediastinal node.
Recognize that in addition to CBC, electrolytes, and LDH, one needs to evaluate the patient’s ability to protect her airway.
Appreciate that there may be alternate sites for a biopsy.
Understand the imaging modalities available and their use.
Appreciate the perioperative risks that exist with mediastinal masses. Understand that an anesthesia consult is necessary and what measures can be taken to address these issues.
