Ultrasound is arguably the most commonly used diagnostic procedure in obstetrics and gynecology. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine recommends accreditation of practices for standardization of examinations as well as following strict guidelines for clinicians performing of various studies, both obstetric and gynecologic. In addition, several pathologies, such as skeletal and cardiac anomalies, are difficult to recognize and assess. Vaginal and uterine bleeding is one of the most common complaints encountered by clinicians in daily practice. This activity will deliver information that will provide new opportunities for clinicians to improve patient care and achieve better outcomes in pregnancy or when gynecologic problems exist.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for OB/GYN generalists and subspecialists, radiologists, family medicine physicians, sonographers, genetic counselors, nurses, fellows, residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals who provide obstetric and gynecologic care to patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss evidence-based guidelines for diagnosing ovarian tumors;
  • Describe how to apply guidelines for optimal visualization to ultrasound practice;
  • List evidence-based rules for assessing anatomy/pathology of the fetal brain with ultrasound;
  • State how to apply evidence-based guidelines when deciding when and how often to perform fetal echocardiography in pregnancy;
  • Identify how to use ultrasound to image adnexal masses;
  • Differentiate between various anomalies of the fetal brain to provide an accurate diagnosis;
  • Evaluate fetal growth deviations, including intrauterine growth restriction and macrosomia, to improve health outcomes;
  • Recognize the basic anatomy of the fetal heart.
