ChildKind Pain Champion Training: Introduction

The goal of this training program is to introduce an interprofessional group of UCM staff to current quality improvement efforts for pain, inform them of the roles and responsibilities of institutional pain champions, and advance their understanding of the need for improved pain management in children, appropriate steps for pain assessment, and interventions that can be implemented to alleviate pain.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all members of the Comer Pain Champion Team: physicians, staff nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare professionals committed to the continuous improvement of pain management in children.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe quality improvement efforts occurring at Comer Children’s Hospital related to improving children’s pain management;
  • Identify the keys responsibilities of the Pain Champion role;
  • Compare evidence that supports differing behavioral and self-report pain scales;
  • Identify the consequences of repeated pain exposure in infants and children;
  • Discuss the appropriate use of vibration and cold for invasive procedures.
